I wish they'd fix the multiplayer. Servers with >10 people are nearly unplayable.

I was SO in...until you start running defense for their release schedule.
1-I reject the notion of praising a dev for doing the bare minimum unless their product is airtight. I'll respect Save the Astronaut for being upfront and all that other nonsense like lack of mtx (what would they even need that money for, lmao, that's pure double-dipping)
2-Yes, they are free to do with their money as they please, as am I with my opinion. I'm not gonna wring my hands and act like I'm not upset because I have just as much of a right to complain about it.
3-I paid precisely for a complete game. As it was back then plains was NOT a complete experience, nor is mistlands for having a just-added system that FEELS like the first step on a ladder and while ashlands is slightly better, I really feel like a biome populated by mostly reskins, reskins with like one new attack and charred warriors and reskins but they are less of a glass cannon this time and reskins but they're ridable now is REALLY what we should be expecting of a final area.
4-the combat is just...ass? Like there's a couple of literally useless combat skills (fists and spears, though that only counts for one-handed spears) and you are at a DISADVANTAGE for being above your enemy in a skirmish like we haven't heard all about the folly of fighting on inclines. And all because of what? Well, low-budget start and a lack of dev time to brush things up (GIVE ME MORE FISTS YOU COWARDS) but more importantly a system that can at best be considered alpha gameplay placeholder should NOT be present in a full release.
All things considered, Valheim needs a good, solid once-over before it's ready to be fully released. And I doubt the (assumed) ocean update that will come before the final EA update of the deep north will account for that. And while I obviously don't condone people going to tell IGS how to do their job in a very rude manner, I can and should be free to verbalize my misgivings about how they handle the game and implicitly the money I paid them, at least partly, on the promise of an experience. Valheim is a good game but with glaring flaws and I just wish the fanbase wasn't so sycophantic sometimes.

The Mistlands were miserable. It's not necessarily the enemies but the pairing of the enemies with the landscape. It takes 3x as long to go anywhere, you can't see anything and you can barely fight things because of the elevation changes. It just brings frustration. The Ashlands are much better even if they are technically more difficult.

@zarodgaming18442025/02/05(水) 10:24
everyone talks good about it, same as the dwarf mining game, but i am sure now it's all lies 😢 the game is just built on addiction, and made with lazyness ..
case and point the repetitive design and addiction mechanics

@mauraine34152025/02/05(水) 10:02
I just can tell the devs don't care about performance, and mocks people about that. If you build, even a tiny house in this game, performance could be destroyed. I had times where I was from +300 FPS to 40 in my base. The game is great and all, but it has that big problem devs are no going to fix.
@Squidlord17382025/02/05(水) 09:22
Just started playing Valheim again, tbh the hardest part of the entire game isn't the bosses, enemies, or resource grinding - it's finding time to play with friends.
That, and the building mechanics -probably half my total game time is building lmao

@jigglybiggs20002025/02/05(水) 08:38
I hope they make a new biome that's underground, it doesn't have to be fire, it can be something like that hidden world in ice age 3
@GrimmWarrior192025/02/05(水) 07:26
Mistlands could have been made leagues better just by allowing the Wisplight to be upgraded even once, I tested a mod that does so and I personally configured the Wisplight to be upgradeable with 5 Wisps + 2 Silver + 1 Eitr for better balance. It plays so much better with just a little wider visibility and you can't upgrade right away, with it made to require Eitr you'll have to be established enough in the Mists to take on Dvergr strongholds for one of their Extractors.
@calebjohnson50582025/02/05(水) 06:37
Great vid. I was excited for the old mistlands update but was disappointed upon release.
@Veklim2025/02/05(水) 06:22
I love Valheim, have sunk many, many hours into it and it's never disappointed. The absolute best I've had of the game has been in collaborative building projects though, there's something so utterly satisfying about getting a few people together and building something wonderful.
@diabloxxx4002025/02/05(水) 05:24
Valheim is one of those games which is worth every cent. So much fun we had, and waiting for upcoming expansion
@TheNordicOutlaw2025/02/05(水) 04:14
My gf and I started playing last year and now sink hours into the game without even realizing it. This is an absolutely amazing game. Thank you for making this history video. Very well done and fun to watch!
@erdelybela24162025/02/05(水) 04:14
Ok, dude, as a game dev I can say with some authority that they won't fix the multiplayer lag overnight. They might have a plan for it, even so there is clearly an underlying system implemented, but every custom object placed (in valheim a building block, a felled tree, whatever) will take its toll on multiplayer speed. What has been done on a map can be pre-loaded, but the environment is constantly changing and changeable, it will be a nightmare without a proper system, probably a complete rework on how the game uses its objects and prefabs + materials (let's not forget, single player experience can be changed into multiplayer anytime, so there is a lot to reprogram, redo). It is an uphill battle, and in this regard minecraft is not a fair comparison, because pixel art apart, the two games are truly different asset-wise and how they use and are supposed to be using their assets.
@solarcon2025/02/05(水) 02:57
Great video man, been watching u grind Valheim for years, love this perspective and the history of it
@mackadam58942025/02/05(水) 02:46
When it comes to the dev team size, you have to think about it fiscally. This is a 1-time-purchase game. They've already made probably 90% of the money they are ever going to make with Valheim. So they are saving their profits from a few years ago in order to pay the team for the next few years. If you make the team much bigger, you run out of money faster.
This is also why I predict, after they release the full game, they will NOT keep adding biomes and random updates to Valheim. I hope they don't. I hope they start working on their next passion project with the same team. So they can release a NEW game that I can pay for, to help support the team for another few years of development. And repeat that dev strategy every few years, instead of adding microtransactions.

@TewaAya2025/02/05(水) 02:42
The game feels like a homebrew tlc d&d over the "eSports"/influencer/cope aggressive marketable live services. Not too sweaty but fulfilling enough as a relaxation "comfy" destress game.
@KotieDev2025/02/05(水) 12:17
I really like this video. It's well put together and talks about Valheim's journey quite well. I wouldn't say it explains anything about how it was made other than who did it but title aside, good video :D

Very timely and excellent video Kysen.
It would help if some folks who love gaming would getting a little more insight into how games are made. The question of why not increase the coding / creation staff is a thorny one really. There's a still excellent book that used to be required reading for many CS degrees - "The Mythical Man Month". More or less, adding additional people to a project increases complexity (5 ball players vs 30), increases energy needed to coordinate activities and doesn't often speed up the timeline. Sometimes the complexity increases faster than the productivity gains and the project bogs down (look at the beautiful CyberPunk).
I realize I had an unusual career - I worked for a gaming company years ago that got bought out by EA. I started off as a coder / programmer and broadened out to systems, networking, and lately cybersec. Games nowadays are fantastic and large endeavors. Very different from my early days at Mindscape where our top games were the original Madden, Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom and others. Most were created either by freelance developers or small teams of 3 or 4 programmers. I was on the IT side, but that's how I got to QA a few games while I was there.
I've worked alongside professional teams of developers in recent years in the telecom industry and I just marvel at the tools, abilities and creations of my colleagues. These aren't your grandfather's games anymore.
😉

I was actually one of the original play testers and helped with the game in its early years (yes I have the cape) and when I first got it there was no sticks or stone or wood or anything to interact with, nothing at all not even a crafting menu

Welllllll I forgot to hit the comment post button before navigating away and lost everything.
Sooo I'm gonna do this again and be more abridged. maaaannn...
Well I joined KH back in October 2022 when I was off work with an Achilles tear (Can't believe it's almost 3 years already). First people I met were Bvit and Tiny. Valheim was the first game I ever modded, Tiny helped me every step of the way.
I made some awesome friends on KH that carried beyond Valheim. My number one would be Toadwart. I got him to jump over to Sea of Thieves for awhile and for a long stint we pirated the seas!! YAR HAR HAR!!! Toad is someone I consider a true online gaming friend. Even though we don't play much lately, I won't forget him. Life just gets away from us. Have to adult too much.
I also played Back 4 Blood a little bit with Bvit, Jingles and Toad. That was a radical time.
In the recent season of KH I got my buddy Skarth to join and we've built our claims together in starter town and beyond. I loved just hanging out in game and just talking with other members in discord while we all did our own things.
There were the badventures like the time our ship capsized in the middle of the ocean and being rescued by other community members. And the times when I was building and out scavenging and suddenly Winter would appear out of nowhere and scare the crap out of me.
Your mods and admins are all top notch and always willing to help.
Your statement about the KH community being altruistic is spot on. There is no shortage of people willing to help. And I think that's just what everyone needs, to be a viking in a community that helps. An escape from reality.
I played my solo campaign for a bit and got the furthest I've ever been alone, to the mistlands, and defeating Yagloth solo. What I've come to realize, I would rather do these late game biomes with comrades. It stinks getting killed over and over then not being able to get your gear, even if you prepare. I'd played the game before with friends in servers and everyone usually got bored or busy around Modor and ended up alone. KH keeps that community open and I know I can come back to it whenever the spirit moves me to.
Thank you for having that space and a wonderful team to keep it all together.
Thank you also for talking to me like someone that cares. You are easy to talk to and I've felt very welcome!
Good people! Everyone one of them. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of it too.
Cheers

I love Valheim and it's one of the top 5 games ever for me, and I'm been playing videogames since the 80's, literally remember playing the original Pong game on the Atari 2600 with the paddles (yes, I'm that old). The problem with laggy multiplayer is true and Steam and Unity are to blame. To fix that issue they would have to redo the game in a new engine and make multiplayer work without steam peer to peer.
@ccarriere59352025/02/04(火) 08:49
Give some love to those who created mods for the game.
@Misves2025/02/04(火) 08:24
Valheim became mine and my friends group resident obsession game along with Minecraft and Terraria. We played it so much our first time, it placed "survival" on my steam recap genre chart.
We had a blast in ashlands, though I still think mistlands peaked when it came to coherency between gameplay elements. We all wait for northlands now, and when our obsession grows enough we try hardcore/nomap/noportals runs (I hate trolls so much). For us this game is at its best as a "this weekend we play 24h a day and then we rest for a month" type experience.
I am confident that northlands will be great, and the devs proved time and time again that they can deliver

Awesome video, and really enjoyed seeing the beginnings of the game up to now. I was late coming into Valheim, but as someone who loves Norse mythology, I fell in love with the game, and love the twist that the developers gave it. After recently having upgraded my GPU, I am looking to jumping back in and playing vanilla and modded Valheim. If you are player who has not experienced Valheim, jump in! Vanilla is hours and hours of good fun gameplay. If you are someone who loves to build, look into modding and the builds you can do are absolutely amazing! ✌

Ashlands just had too many useless items you'd get in large amounts. Your inventory would just get clogged. Siege equipment just didn't work for what it was supposed to be used for. you couldn't really siege the the forts, basically everyone just hopped the walls after destroying the turrets on one side. Biome was only difficult when you first land and if you know nothing of the biome, which I made sure I knew nothing because it was way more fun to get to learn everything as I played.
Sad the Lavaithens were removed thou, that was a very neat mechanic even if it was often annoying.
Also a lot of people tend to forget how cheap the game was. Heck if the plains was the last biome it would have still been a good game.
Multiplayer scaling also doesn't function right. Two players is max difficulty, after that the difficulty scales lower than the amount of players

I'm having a break from Valheim. I don't want to get bored, starting the game from the start after every update. Just today, I started to talk about games, and instantly there was someone else starting to talk about Valheim. The game has true fans, me included. They are patient.
@dinhnghi36422025/02/04(火) 02:58
Yall complain about lack of update and take too long to update, when the game doesn't include microtransaction or in-game purchasing. Don't expect the game to have more update, treat it like a CD include a game key you bought when you were younger. You bought it, that's it
@Gunshywally13692025/02/04(火) 02:24
Remember if you let an indie game go corporate, you get more updates, in the form of micro-transactions.

I absolutely love Valheim. I have more than 2500 hours in the game, which I think speaks for itself. I go back and forth between adventuring (typically creating new characters to enjoy the biomes all over again) and building in "creative" mode: A month of adventuring and I am ready for some building, and vice versa!
But also, I am a middle-aged man and my reflexes are not what they were. And I find the later biomes - Mistlands (somewhat) and Ashlands (definitely!) too hard for my skill level. I have taken a handful of characters through Mistlands by lowering the difficulty a bit, but Ashlands I just die and die and die, and it's honestly not very fun for me.
I can easily understand why many players crave the challenge of the later biomes (and why Mistlands and Ashlands hit the mark for them), but honestly I am looking more for a relaxing experience of adventuring and exploration. How to cater for both players like me, and for the more competitive-minded?

valheim is in the simlar boat to palworld, grounded, lethal company, and many other "streamer games". They get shown off by popular streamers, and the game is fun and good. Lots of people play the game for a month or two, but there isnt enough content to keep players around for long. Valheim isnt a game you can just play forever and thats fine. I am excited for the deep north and 1.0 as I feel it will revive the game pretty well. Ultimately valheim is a game that isnt past its prime, its just its prime was due to outside influence.
@stevanhaire53002025/02/04(火) 12:38
Scaling up development a ton doesn’t even make sense as it’s not a live service game. They’d burn more money to finish the game faster, but probably wouldn’t make their money back from the costs of scaling the team.

Im mostly certain that most current players are still playing between updates thanks to mods, and im not saying that the mods are the base of the game but it definitely helps keeping a fresh feel to the game. I personally never came back since the mistlands and that is also because ive been playing and enjoying other titles while i waited so long for another updade on valheim. Despite all this if people never tried it they should definitely do as there's still tons of content specially for people starting now
@NightBane3452025/02/04(火) 11:22
People really seem to forget that a Survival game, is not a game like Fortnite, CS GO, or whatever game that is competitive with continuous things spewed out to it.
Along with forgetting the team of Valheim is fairly small, so they don't got all the people bigger studios have to just churn out constant updates/content. But good thing with it being smaller, and not bound to some big company is they have more freedom and can actually take time to refine things for the game, and not release a massive buggy mess that big studios force out to their games

Me and my friends started a playthrough just after christmas and are now just about to kill the queen and go into the ashlands after.
people after work = or me jobless the housewife role doing all the farming.
its alot of fun and a game which lots of people find hard to complete solo. - the more people despite scaling make the game easier.
lots of fun and teamwork, if u got friends to play with its an ace game.

Your title should really be "A love letter to Valheim".
I agree with you - although I think there is only so much you can push the "game is art" analogy to justify very slow release times. You can still expand the team and keep creative control to ensure the vision is unchanged as the game develops.
The question to ask here is why did it take so long to release the Mistlands? What aspects took the longest time to complete? Was that the same for the Ashlands and if so, what could be done to reduce that time?
I don't mind the last two biomes at all - although you should be able to expand the wisplight to push the mists further back than you can currently.
I actually enjoy the more frantic pace of the Ashlands. It is a battleground and you have to fight every step of the way, which is fine as long as other biomes offer more relaxed experiences.
I have put thousands of hours into this game and still love playing it. I probably do think it is my favourite overall game.
At the moment I have pretty much progressed as much as I can (without defeating Fader) and built everything I wanted to build, so I am dipping in occasionally, but generally I'm waiting for 1.0.
I love the idea of having some anti-gravity gear that enables you to adventure on the underside of the world. That would be cool.
I've also said before that I think the Deep North should feature hidden areas, possibly huge underground caverns that are a fantastic realm very different to what you would expect in a frozen landscape.

@chadstrickland68772025/02/04(火) 07:08
I love Valheim and it is still my most played game on Steam but I did not return for the Ashlands. Not because I don't like the game any more. I am more so waiting until the game as a whole is done at this point. With a lot of these updates it isn't just the endgame that changes but a lot of the in between game as well. I just want a game a can go through completely from start to finish. I have also dabbled with mods as well and really hope after the game launches there will be more support for them.

"Maybe gjall have to get good" 🤣
@IsoSokkoMyllikas-db8xw2025/02/04(火) 06:14
I think one reason why people have been disappointed in new updates is that as Valheim has become quite popular, people have invested in it emotionally and have started to expect a LOT from it. Things it really cannot even fulfil. And so they are disappointed when things do not come out exactly as they want.
For me, Ashlands has been really difficult and even frustrating at times, and to be honest, I do not care about Ashland's aesthetics much. There are things I would have liked to be a bit different. (My fav is Mistlands, which I guess isn't a popular opinion bc ppl seem to dislike the fog and the terrain. But I ADORE Mistlands. :D )
Am I disappointed, tho? No. Valheim is awesome and I love it.

I got the game somewhat recently and already have 100+hrs and I just made it to the Ashland's, this game 100% became one of my favorite games of all time. playing the game with the boys for the first time and getting obliterated by a troll is always something to remember.

@PablitoCristo2025/02/04(火) 04:23

@PablitoCristo2025/02/05(水) 02:28
@grungehog im sorry but 13 people ain't that sweet spot
@grungehog2025/02/04(火) 05:03
Hiring more staff doesn't necessarily equate being more productive, there's a sweet spot where you have neither too few people nor too many people, but more people doesn't mean better, they might hire more people that also work slowly or they might need to train the new hires to do the workflow they expect, ultimately it might just mean they make less money for no change in productivity.
I agree that they should be working a bit harder though, especially in the realm of optimisation, which was something they obsessed about in the early days, the performance state of the game in Ashlands is unacceptable especially in multiplayer, considering the game difficulty there and how many mobs spawn, the lag is the biggest killer.

@realderek2025/02/04(火) 04:01
Valheim sucked me in like no other game has been able to do in the last 10 years. I think after the plains, the game loop became too repetitive and noticeable for me. One of the things I loved was there was so much to do other than fighting. Exploring, farming, cooking, fishing, and building. I wish we could have MORE to do instead of more biomes to do the same thing with a new coat of paint.

I just gotta say that my hours compared to all other games ( besides world of Warcraft, but that's a different beast) this has been one of the best games I have played. I was talked into joining it with my guild homies and I'm happy it happened. The experiences we had exploring, reaching far lands and raiding random dungeons or spending hours on boats in search of sea serps was insanely fun and scary at the same time. Building has never interested me until I started this game and I'm hooked with the real life mechanics of it. Yeah I gotta say thanks to the developers for putting such a well put game out for us to enjoy. Either solo or with groups I always have an amazing time. One of my top 5 games I have ever played and I always spread the word to family and friends to give it a look.

@Revelwoodie2025/02/04(火) 01:10
I've never had ANY lag problems in Valheim. Then I finished my plains farmhouse base. And I thought, "I should go back and make a separate base for each biome." So I did. I just finished my black forest base -- the main manor house, several cabins, dock and fishing buildings, etc. All incorporating the Haldor encampment. Awesome! And tonight, the people from my group game are coming in for a tour. So I went around to light all the torches and candles before the big reveal. And WOW...I got lag. My first ever lag. My next build was going to be a treehouse complex in the swamp. Those plans are shelved now, because I'm afraid that will make my game literally unplayable. What's the solution here?
@marklentz10952025/02/04(火) 01:05
Two of my favorite all time games- Valheim and Hades. Small teams can do big things.
@Xanchie2025/02/04(火) 12:41
The building instances is definetly the games weakest part. Not only multiplayer but making big solo mega bases is nearly impossible and is noticable after building for many many hours.
I downloaded a scaling instances mod, so you can scale 1 wall instance to however big you want and it only counts as 1 instance. My 23k instances castle went to 6k and all the framedrops went away 💀
If Valheim can somehow manage to lesser instances since it's the health calculating that takes a lot of processing building big will be no more issue. Til then mods will have to do.

Valheim needs something like the Epic loot mod as part of the base game 10000000000000000%. The game loops get a little boring if there no sense of growth between armor material types and overall game progression.

I have almost 3,000 hours in Valheim, I've been playing since it was released, its one of those that I'll play straight through day and night for 6 or 7 months, then I'll walk away from it for a month or two, and jump right back in. It is by far my favorite game of all time. I am still playing Valheim myself, on a custom server which is modded. The admin does part of the modding himself, and has actually managed to improve the netcode a good bit, so that fighting while out and about in a team is possible, even in Ashlands, without invisible mobs attacking you out of nowhere. There is a lot of quick and dirty coding in that original netcode, sadly.
The one thing I do not agree with from this video is that Ashlands is the best biome - to me it looks rushed and unfinished, especially compared to Mistlands which I really like. The siege equipment in Ashlands is totally useless, the fortresses are copy+paste, there is no reason at all to go for flamemetal spires since you find that much in fortress chests, and the Morgen caves are just troll caves 2.0. (Gotta admit though that the server is running a mod which respawns resources, which allows it to be played longterm - I looove respawning trees!)

Valheim is a fun relaxing game if thats what you want it to be. Though it can hand you your death at the most inopportune time! Love the building and massive crafting and food part of the game. Haven't played in awhile, and never did play with others, though that would be fun, especially when I ran into my first troll!!! Most likely ill come back to the game after completion, and start all over from the beginning.
